Wasserbasierte und ölfreie Hautpflege

Especially for people with oily or blemished skin, the trend is increasingly moving towards water-based and oil-free textures. This may sound innovative at first, but unfortunately, it is not. These products may offer a pleasantly light and refreshing consistency, but they do nothing for your skin health and can lead to even more sebum production, especially in oily skin. This creates a vicious cycle.

Although water is a natural substance, it requires many additives to remain stable in a cosmetic product at all.

In addition, water is often used as a very inexpensive filler or to declare a higher natural content in a product. Especially in natural cosmetics or natural-looking cosmetics that advertise a certain percentage of natural ingredients, there is often a small asterisk that only in the legend indicates that the water content was included in this determination.

With a water content of 50% (which is not apparent to the end consumer), it is hardly meaningful if the total natural content is, for example, 70%. Water is natural, but it does not bring any further properties of an active ingredient with it.

Since water is also the elixir of life for all microorganisms, it becomes contaminated within a very short time. Thus, a partly very high preservation is necessary for the stability and shelf life of a cosmetic with a water phase. In natural cosmetics, alcohols are often used here, which irritate and dry out the skin. In conventional cosmetics, combinations of various (synthetic) preservatives are used, which also include parabens. These stress and irritate the skin or cause increased allergies.

In order for the various phases of a product with a water content to combine, emulsifiers are required. While water evaporates very quickly after application to the skin, these additives remain on the skin. In combination with water, which hits the skin from the outside, they wash out the skin's own lipids, the skin barrier is disrupted, the skin becomes drier and more susceptible to microorganisms. Blemishes arise, the skin tends to become increasingly sensitive. To "repair" itself, sebum production is now stimulated. Oily skin therefore tends to become even oilier. Even in the care of oily skin, oils/lipids play an important role in balancing the skin and should never be replaced by oil-free or drying products. They may provide temporary relief, but in the long term, they worsen the initial situation.

Another aid to make water stable in cosmetic products are consistency enhancers. They prevent the fluidity of water and are decisive for the consistency of the product.

All these aids, such as preservatives, emulsifiers, and consistency enhancers, accumulate with regular use of the products and the skin's irritation threshold can quickly be exceeded.

The most consistent way to avoid these additives is waterless products / pure oils for the care and cleansing of the skin. They offer a care solution for almost every skin condition. For example, jojoba or argan oil is perfectly suited for the care of oily and blemished skin. What is decisive for effective care with plant oils, besides the (preferably organic) quality, gentle extraction using the cold-pressing process, and the correct selection of oils, is the suitable fatty acid composition. In addition to essential fatty acids, the oil should be rich in phytosterols (which are very similar to the cholesterol in the skin barrier), antioxidants, and vitamins (such as Vit. E + D).

Especially for sensitive, barrier-disrupted, atopic, and neurodermatitis-prone skin, pure oil care is excellently suited, as it requires no additives. It is also one of the best skin care concepts for babies and children.

Paraffin oils/mineral oils/petrolatum are not suitable. They merely remain on the skin surface and cause skin swelling due to their occlusivity. This leads to a disrupted skin barrier, the skin becomes more permeable, sensitive, and susceptible in the long term.

Through care with pure oils OR a care product that contains both a moisture content and lipids, the TEWL (transepidermal water loss) is reduced and the skin barrier is strengthened. Thus, the moisture content of the skin steadily increases from within.

For all those who cannot get along with pure oil care or whose dehydrated skin needs an extra dose of moisture, the alternative is to use products in which the water phase is replaced by moisturizing plant extracts or plant juices. These bring significantly more active ingredient power with them and offer very high-quality skin care.

The preservatives listed in the cosmetic regulation can also be avoided and replaced with high-quality, skin-friendly, and skin-caring natural alternatives. Since these are associated with significantly higher costs, they are not used as frequently or are only found in slightly higher-priced products.

In summary, it can be stated that healthy skin always needs the two main components, fat and moisture, this should also be taken into account when caring for oily skin.

In our products, which combine exactly these two components, we do without a water phase and replace it with moisturizing, refreshing, and soothing organic Aloe Vera direct juice. For maximum active ingredient power without fillers.

In addition, we do without drying, monovalent alcohols and rely on a low, natural, high-quality, and skin-caring preservation. You can find detailed information about this in our INCI Glossary.
