Hautpflege in der Schwangerschaft

During pregnancy, not only certain foods should be avoided, but also some ingredients in skincare products.

Certain ingredients in cosmetics can affect our bodies and, like food, may contain contaminants or cause unwanted side effects. During pregnancy, these can sometimes have serious consequences.

Some ingredients can even enter the bloodstream and thus reach the fetus, or be ingested orally by the baby through breast milk. We will now discuss which ingredients you should avoid, especially during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and for your children.

❌ Petroleum-based ingredients / MOSH & MOAH

  • Health concerns.
  • Are very easily absorbed by the body, can accumulate in the organs, and thus come into contact with the unborn child very quickly
  • Carcinogenic & mutagenic
  • Seal the skin, preventing it from breathing. This provides the ideal breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms.
  • You can identify them by the INCI: Paraffinum Liquidum, Isoparaffin, Microcrystalline (Wax), Vaseline, Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, Cera Microcristallina, Ceresin, Ozokerite

    ❌ Fragrances

    • Allergen-inducing
    • Can harm the embryo
    • Can have negative effects on the fertility of male fetuses
    • Newborns are very sensitive to fragrances of any kind.
    • They can also increase the risk of later allergies, dermatitis, or respiratory problems, especially in children.
    • Natural fragrances, such as essential oils, are NOT an alternative. They can be just as irritating to the skin, promote pigmentation disorders, which are already exacerbated by the hormonal changes during pregnancy (pregnancy mask), can cause photosensitivity, and some essential oils can even induce labor.

    ❌ Parabens

    • Can have hormonal effects and disrupt the hormone system.

    ❌ Phthalates (plasticizers)

    • Carcinogenic
    • Promote diabetes & high blood pressure
    • Can lead to the feminization of male fetuses
    • You can identify them by the following names: DEP, diethyl phthalate, DMP, dimethyl phthalate

    ❌ PEG (polyethylene glycol)

    • Emulsifier / surfactant
    • Promotes allergies
    • Makes the skin more permeable to contaminants

    ❌ Retinol / retinoic acid

    • Can cause developmental disorders
    • You can identify it under: retinoic acid, retinyl palmitate, retinaldehyde, adapalene, tretinoin, tazarotene, Tazorac, isotretinoin

    ❌ Salicylic acid

    • According to the cosmetics regulation, it may only be used in concentrations of up to 2%

    ❌ Triclosan

    • Preservative
    • Neurotoxic effects on the fetus

    ❌ Silicones

    • Petroleum-based plastics
    • Seal the skin, damage the skin barrier, and make the skin more vulnerable in the long term.
    • You can identify them under: dimethicone, methicone, cyclomethicone, polysiloxane

    ❌ Primary alcohols

    • Dry out the skin
    • Damage the skin barrier
    • Promote skin irritation
    • You can identify them by the following INCI names: Alcohol, Alcohol Denat., Ethanol, Ethyl Alcohol, Methanol, Propyl Alcohol, Propanol, Isopropyl Alcohol, Isopropanol, Benzyl Alcohol

❌ Furthermore, it is recommended to avoid chemical UV filters, products containing nanoparticles, aluminum salts, and formaldehyde.

In general, we recommend choosing cosmetics without synthetic ingredients. Retinol and salicylic acid are safe outside of pregnancy, provided there is no allergy to these substances.

None of the Love it Pure Basic Care products contains any of the listed ingredients and is therefore ideal for you during pregnancy and beyond.
