Emulgatoren - Das sollten Sie wissen

Oils form the basis of every skincare routine. Every cream or lotion consists of an O/W emulsion (or W/O emulsion), i.e., the two main components of oil and water. These are combined using emulsifiers, as they naturally repel each other and would form two separate phases.

Through an amphiphilic emulsifier, which has both a hydrophilic (water-loving) and a lipophilic (fat-loving) part, water and oil combine to form an emulsion.

The type of emulsifier is very crucial for the skin, as there are also emulsifiers that are irritating, can trigger allergies, or attack the skin barrier. These include, for example, polyethylene glycols, better known to many as PEGs. These are synthetic molecular compounds made from the extremely toxic and environmentally harmful petroleum derivative ethylene oxide.

PEGs can trigger allergies, are potentially carcinogenic, and can damage genetic material.

Furthermore, emulsifiers can dry out your skin, because they not only emulsify the product but also bind the skin's own fats, thereby attacking the protective lipid barrier. Upon further contact with water, the skin's own lipids are literally washed away, and the skin barrier is extremely weakened.

This not only leads to increased transepidermal water loss (loss of skin moisture) and thus to sagging and premature aging of the skin, but also weakens the skin's own immune system.

The protection of the skin against environmental influences, pollutants, and microorganisms is rapidly reduced, which can lead to inflammation, blemishes, eczema, and redness, among other things.

How to recognize emulsifiers:

Often, the ingredients of cosmetics are not that easy to decipher, as they are usually only printed as INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients).

In conventional cosmetics, emulsifiers are hidden behind ingredients that start with "PEG" or end in "-eth". Examples include PEG-8, Laureth 4, or Ceteareth-15.

Emulsifiers used in natural cosmetics include, for example, Sucrose Stearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetearyl Glucoside, or Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides.

In this regard, natural emulsifiers should be preferred over synthetic ones, as they are significantly more skin-friendly and less harmful to the environment.

Furthermore, you should opt for emulsions that use as few emulsifiers as possible and that also contain additional nourishing substances and moisturizers, such as glycerin, as these counteract the drying out of the skin caused by emulsifiers.

Skincare with oils offers distinct advantages. Skincare with pure oils makes it possible to dispense not only with emulsifiers entirely but also with the use of preservatives.

A new and not entirely unfounded trend in skincare is so-called "layering." We understand this as applying the moisture component and the oil component one after the other, rather than in the form of an emulsion.

Our skin actually possesses its own natural emulsifiers that make oil and moisture miscible on the skin. Fat-soluble and water-soluble active ingredients can thus be wonderfully incorporated into the skin, and as a positive side effect, this form of application makes it possible to avoid many emulsifiers and preservatives.

Our facial oils therefore offer not only a very high-quality and effective, but also mild care for the skin, which actively counteracts both transepidermal water loss and skin aging. In combination with our hyaluronic-acid-based Refreshing Face Fluid, the skin is intensely moisturized and the skin barrier is strengthened.

When layering, the skincare routine should always begin with the light moisture phase and end with a lipid.

It is, of course, also possible to mix the moisture and oil components in the palms of your hands and then apply them to the skin.

We, too, cannot get by entirely without emulsifiers.

For the emulsions from Love it Pure, we rely on very mild, highly tolerable, and skin-caring emulsifiers based on plant amino acids and rice bran, which are used in very small quantities.

Due to a balanced ratio of lipid-containing and moisturizing active ingredients in our formulations, there is no impairment of the skin barrier, and no intolerances or skin irritations are to be expected.
